Our vision is crucial, but until there is an issue with our eyes, it is easy to forget how important they are in our day-to-day lives. The majority of eye diseases and conditions occur slowly and over many years. It is the subtle differences that are so hard to spot, and often pass unnoticed.
Why should you get an eye exam?
Eye conditions frequently cause vision loss and sometimes blindness, but the majority of issues can be mitigated or treated if caught early enough. Even when a disease cannot be cured, the effects can usually be slowed, giving you better vision for as long as possible.
A comprehensive eye exam can pick up problems that don’t have any noticeable symptoms, and this makes regular checkups important. Our eyes are also good indicators of overall health. For example, eye exams can detect high blood pressure and signs of diabetes, which may have gone otherwise unnoticed.
When should I get an eye exam?
The recommended frequency of eye exams can vary depending on your age, overall health, and any specific eye conditions or risk factors you may have. In general, an annual eye exam is recommended. It’s critical to get an additional exam if you are experiencing:
- spots, flashes of light or floating shapes
- difficulty driving at night / in dark conditions
- eye strain, blurred vision and/or headaches
- dizziness and not being able to focus on moving objects
If you can’t remember when your last appointment was, it might be time.
What happens at an eye exam?
We have state-of-the-art equipment at our practice, designed to provide the greatest detail while being as least invasive as possible. An eye exam typically includes; retinal photography, testing eye pressure, checking vision for prescription lenses, and an overall eye health assessment. An OCT (optical coherence tomography) scan can also be taken, which is similar to an ultrasound, for an even more accurate view of the eye. Tests such as these can help detect conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
